This is a lecture and discussion course that explores selected topics in Chinese philosophy, varying in topic from year to year. Topics that may be covered include the debate over people’s nature (xìng 性) in pre-Qin thought; conceptions of moral agency; normative ethics; metaethics; the significance of wú wéi 無為 (non-action); knowledge and scepticism; and conceptions of dào 道. Course readings will focus on primary sources addressing the selected topic (most readings will be available in both the original Chinese and English translation). Class time will be divided roughly evenly between lecture and discussion. Students may be asked to take turns leading discussion.
